WSC Women fall to Augustana

Augustana outscored Wayne State 24-12 in the second quarter thanks to 75 percent shooting (9-12) as the visiting Vikings defeated the Wildcats 87-73 Friday evening in NSIC South Division women’s basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.

Augustana improves to 10-4 and 9-3 in the division while WSC is now 6-9 and 5-8 in the NSIC South Division.Wayne State never led in the contest. The first quarter was close between the two clubs with each team recording a pair of scoring runs at the end of the quarter.

With Augustana leading 12-11 following a Lauren Zacharias 3-pointer for WSC, the Vikings scored the next seven points to take their biggest lead of the quarter at 19-11.

WSC used 3-pointers from Erin Norling and Josey Ryan to cap the first quarter, cutting Augustana’s lead to 19-17 after 10 minutes of play.

Early in the second quarter, the Vikings used a 9-0 run to turn a 21-19 lead into a 30-19 advantage with 6:42 left in the quarter.

Thanks to stellar shooting, going 9-12 from the field and 4-4 at the foul line in the quarter, the Vikings outscored WSC 24-12 in the quarter to take a 43-29 lead at intermission.

Wayne State came out in the third quarter making shots, going 7-12 for 58 percent, but could not cut into the Augustana lead as the efficient Vikings made 8-17 to maintain their double digit lead.

The Wildcats got as close as eight at 59-51 following a Josey Ryan basket with 1:05 to play in the quarter but the Vikings closed with a 63-51 lead.

WSC stayed within reach early in the fourth quarter as the ‘Cats trailed 68-61 with 5:47 to play following an Autumn Mlinar 3-pointer.

But Augustana scored the next eight points to go in front 76-61 and the Vikings closed with the 87-73 win.

Senior Erin Norling paced Wayne State with 17 points to go with five assists. Kylie Hammer and Josey Ryan each scored 11 points while senior center Brittany Bongartz, playing for the first time in three weeks due to injury, added 10 points.

WSC made 27 of 61 shots in the game for 44.3 percent, going 11 of 24 behind the arc. The ‘Cats made 8 of 12 at the free throw line.

Augustana had five players in double figures led by Izzy Van Veldhuizen with 16 points. Hannah Mitby scored 15 with Lauren Sees and Janelle Shiffler each recording 13 points. Vishe’ Rabb accounted for 10 points.

The Vikings shot 53.3 percent on 32 of 60 shooting, including 10 of 19 from 3-point range. Augustana also made 13 of 16 at the charity stripe.

Augustana held a 35-29 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats despite five rebounds each by Mlinar and Ryan.

The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the regular season finale for the Wildcats.
