Women’s Basketball: Panthers fall with Spires last second tip in

YORK – York College came back to tie the game late looking to force an overtime period. However, a tip-in with 0.3 seconds remaining gave the Spires from the University of St. Mary the road win 68-66.

York trailed by six points at the half before climbing back into the game in the third quarter. The Panthers opened up the second half with a 9-1 run that gave them a 37-31 lead. The rest of the quarter was back and forth with the Spires again holding a two-point lead going into the final period.

With two minutes remaining the Panthers found themselves down by five points. Deja Derrell (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) put a three-point attempt up and sank it to move York within two at 61-63. After a Spires basket, the Panthers took a timeout to discuss the final minute of play.

Derrell got another opportunity after an offensive rebound by Amaia Diez (SO/Pamplona, Spain) found her in the corner. She threw up another long ball and brought the Panthers within one. After each team had another possession without scoring the Panthers were forced to foul. The USM player made just 1-of-2 from the line and gave York the opportunity to tie the game with 16 seconds left. Diez drove the lane with 12 seconds and was fouled sending her to the line. With the pressure on she sank both attempts and tied the game for the 11th time of the night at 66-66.

The Panthers looked to force overtime as Kiara Pesina (SO/San Antonio, Texas) grabbed the missed shot by USM with three seconds remaining and dribbled down the sideline. The ball hit the sideline and was called with one second on the clock as a turnover. The Spires got a chance to end it and did just that after inbounding the ball into the key. A quick jump and tip gave them the win 68-66.

Amaia Diez led all scorers with 24 points, while Deja Derrell was the only other Panther in double figures with 13.

York will travel to Oklahoma this weekend to face Oklahoma Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
