Wayne State Baseball routs Newman

Wayne State College scored at least one run in the first five innings and had 14 hits that included nine for extra bases as the Wildcats cruised to a 15-1 victory in seven innings at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats take two of three games in the series from the Jets and improve to 6-4 on the season while Newman falls to 4-9.

The Cats started the scoring in the top of the first when leadoff batter Noah Roberts doubled and scored on Andrew Hansons double for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.

WSC produced five runs in the second inning on five hits for a 6-0 lead. Hansons bases-loaded double was the big hit of the inning along with an RBI double from Bryce Bisenius and an RBI single by Roberts.

Three more runs from the Wildcats in the top of the third inning gave WSC a 9-0 advantage. Peyton Barnes had a two-run double down the right field line that scored Connor Fiene (error) and CJ Neumann (walk) with Alex Logelin adding a sacrifice fly that brought home Brendan Madsen (walk).

Wayne State took a 13-0 lead in the fourth scoring four more runs. Neumann started the scoring with a solo homer to center field followed by a three-run blast from Barnes that scored Fiene (single) and Madsen (walk).

The Wildcats closed their scoring with two runs in the fifth inning as Madsen delivered a two-run double that scored Bisenius and Colin Chick, who both walked to start the inning.

Newman got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 15-1.

Wayne State had 14 hits in the win to just three for Newman. Barnes led the Wildcat hit barrage going 3 for 4 with a homer, double and five RBI. Hanson was 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Designated hitter Noah Roberts was 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored while junior catcher Connor Fiene was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Neumann added a solo homer while Max Ploof, Bisenius and Madsen each doubled.

Sophomore starter Ryan Obrecht (1-1) notched the pitching win, firing five innings of two-hit ball. He allowed just one run with six strikeouts and two walks. Logan Walters worked one inning of relief, allowing one hit with three strikeouts, while Josh Renken worked a perfect seventh inning recording one strikeout.

The Wildcats resume play on Sunday, March 8th when Wayne State takes their spring break trip to Florida. WSC will face Tiffin (Ohio) in the first of five games at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.
