Wayne State Baseball blanks Northern State

Senior first baseman Bryce Bisenius homered twice and was 3 for 4 with three runs scored while five Wildcat pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead Wayne State College in an 8-0 non-conference baseball victory over Northern State Tuesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. WSC is now 8-6 on the year while Northern State falls to 0-12.

Scoreless entering the third inning, the Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning with two outs and no runners on base when Peyton Barnes doubled to center field and scored on a Brendan Madsen two-run homer to right field for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.

WSC added two more runs in the fourth when Bisenius singled and Noah Roberts walked with both runners scoring on a Jake Lemar double to right field for a 4-0 advantage.

Two more runs for Wayne State in the fifth gave the Cats a 6-0 lead. Bisenius belted a one-out, opposite field homer to left field, for the first run while Roberts was hit by a pitch and scored on a Lemar RBI single to left.

Wayne State added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the scoring. Bisenius connected for another solo homer in the seventh while Colin Chick singled in the eighth and scored on a Northern State throwing error for the final run.

WSC held a 12-5 edge in hits over Northern State, led by Bisenius going 3 for 4 with a pair of homers, three runs scored and two RBI. Lemar ended 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI while Chick finished 2 for 5 with a pair of singles and run scored.

Logelin went 2 for 5 with a double while Madsen hit a two-run homer. Andrew Hanson and Barnes each doubled.

Five Wildcat pitchers held the Wolves to just five hits while fanning 11 Northern State batters in the win. Sophomore starter Ryan Obrecht (2-0) earned the win, pitching five innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts and one walk. Logan Walters and Lawson Zenner each worked one inning of hitless relief with two strikeouts each. Josh Renken pitched one inning and fanned two batters while allowing two hits. Grant Carl worked the final inning and gave up one hit.

Wayne State will close out their Florida Spring Break Trip Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. facing #14 Ashland (Ohio) at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.
