UNO Women’s Summit League Tournament Run ends in Championship Game loss to South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Omaha women’s basketball team concluded its season with a 66-43 loss to No. 2 South Dakota in the Summit League Championship Final on Tuesday afternoon at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Mavericks are the first No. 8 seed on the men’s and women’s side to make the Summit League Championship Final in tournament history. Omaha finishes the 2020-21 campaign with a 7-13 overall record.

Leaders for Omaha
Lauren Frost was the lone Maverick in double-figures with 10 points and five rebounds. Elena Pilakouta had nine points, followed by six points and three boards from Mariah Murdie.

Leaders for South Dakota
Hannah Sjerven led Coyotes with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds while Chloe Lamb tallied 17 points and six rebounds. Liv Korngable and Maddie Krull chipped in eight points apiece.

Team Stats
Omaha shot 32.5% (13-of-14) to South Dakota’s 44.1% (26-of-59). The Mavericks shot 6-of-12 from beyond the arc and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. USD outrebounded Omaha 33-27 and outscored the Mavericks 32-12 in the paint.

Inside the First Quarter
South Dakota opened the game with a 13-0 lead before a three by Josie Filer and a jumper by Claire Killian got the Mavericks within eight. The Coyotes forced four Omaha turnovers and hit three three-pointers to take a 15-5 lead after the first.

Inside the Second Quarter
Trailing 21-14, the Mavericks got back-to-back treys from Murdie and Sophie Johnston to cut the deficit to one with 3:21 left. South Dakota answered with a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.

Inside the Third Quarter
Pilakouta began the third with a layup before the Coyotes reeled off 13 straight points to stretch the lead to 42-23 midway through the third quarter. Pilakouta added three points in the final minute of the quarter. USD outscored the Mavericks 20-9 in the quarter to expand the lead to 49-30 heading into the final quarter.

Inside the Fourth Quarter
Frost had a team-high four points in the final quarter while Abby Johnson added three points for the Mavericks. Sarah Schmitt scored a layup and Murdie added a basket while Kia Wilson had a pair of free throws.
