MACOMB, Ill. – The Omaha volleyball team swept Western Illinois (25-17, 25-13, 25-19) on the road to stretch its win streak to five matches on Monday afternoon in Macomb, Ill.
The Mavericks improve to 8-4 (7-3 Summit League) while Leathernecks fall to 0-11 (0-10).
Leaders for Western Illinois
Mariah Mitchell posted a team-high seven kills, followed by six kills from Aubrey Putman and Emma Norris. Cassie Hunt handed out 19 assists and Putman led the Leathernecks with seven digs.
Omaha hit .388 to Western Illinois’ .163. The Mavericks totaled 42 kills, 32 digs and nine service aces in the victory. Western Illinois had 28 kills, 28 digs and four service aces as a team. Omaha posted a 6-2 advantage over WIU in blocks in the three-set victory.
Inside the First Set
The Mavericks held a 14-13 lead until an 8-0 run blew the set wide open at 22-13. Blaschko contributed three kills, along with a pair of aces by Schaecher and kills by Fairbanks and Clarkson helped spearhead the 8-0 run. Blaschko’s fourth kill of the day set up set points for the Mavericks before Blase’s kill clinched the 25-17 first-set win.
Inside the Second Set
Three consecutive Leatherneck errors allowed the Mavericks to build an 11-6 lead in the second set. With a 16-11 lead, Fairbanks and Limback fired back-to-back kills before Mountjoy’s service ace stretched Omaha’s lead to 19-11.
Omaha scored the final four points of the set of kill by Blaschko, an ace and kill from Fairbanks and a ball handling error on the Leathernecks.
Inside the Third Set
Western Illinois and Omaha were locked in a tie at 13 until a 5-0 scoring spree from the Mavericks allowed Omaha to take control of the set. Abby Plouzek collected her first two kills of the season while Limback’s kill and a pair of WIU errors led Omaha to an 18-13 lead.
Omaha expanded its lead to 24-17 until two straight points by the Leathernecks brought Western Illinois within five of the Mavericks. A Western Illinois service error clinched the match point for the Mavericks with a 25-19 win.
The Mavericks host South Dakota State on Friday and Saturday, March 5-6. Friday’s match is set for 7 p.m. while first serve on Saturday is at 6 p.m.
