DENVER, Colo. – The Omaha volleyball team captured its first-ever win in Denver on Monday afternoon, toppling the Pioneers 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 27-25). The Mavericks move to 2-2 (1-1 Summit League) on the season while Denver falls to 1-1 (1-1).
The 3-1 victory is Omaha’s second win all-time against Denver after the Mavericks swept the Pioneers on Oct. 24, 2015 in Baxter Arena.
Leaders for Omaha
Freshman McKenna Ruch garnered her second double-double of the season with a season-high 17 kills and 11 digs. Sadie Limback hit .351 with a season-high 16 kills while Anna Blaschko posted a season-high 12 kills while hitting .391.
Sami Clarkson collected her 12th career double-double with season-high totals of 44 assists and 12 digs. Claire Mountjoy totaled a team-high 17 digs and added six assists. Freshman Kenedy Schaecher tied her season-high with nine digs.
Leaders for Denver
Tina Boe led the Pioneers with 11 kills and seven blocks. Erica Andrich tallied nine kills and 14 digs while Lorrin Poulter, Brianna Green and Ari Winters chipped in seven kills apiece.
Macy Carrabine recorded a team-high 19 digs and Ellie Anderson dished out 27 assists for Denver.
Omaha hit .201 to Denver’s .147 in the four-set win. As a team, the Mavericks had 57 kills with a service ace and 66 digs. Denver posted a 12-5 advantage in blocks over Omaha and tallied 47 kills with five service aces and 62 digs.
Inside the First Set
After playing to a tie at 15, the Mavericks capitalized on four straight Pioneer attack errors to take control of the set with a 19-15 lead. Denver got within 23-20 until back-to-back kills by Rylee Marshall and Claire Leonard clinched the first-set victory for the Mavericks.
With the 25-20 win, Omaha won its first set for the first time this season. The Mavericks hit .158 with 13 kills while limiting Denver to a -.022 hitting percentage. Ruch went to work early for Omaha, posting four kills with five digs.
Inside the Second Set
Denver answered by opening the second set with a 5-0 lead over the Mavericks. Omaha got within four at 9-5 after a kill by Blaschko, but the Pioneers held off a comeback attempt by the Mavericks to tie the match back up at one.
Omaha was held to .088 hitting with Limback leading the attack with four kills. DU hit .229 as a team with three Pioneers totaling three kills in the set.
Inside the Third Set
Omaha and Denver were tied at 13 before the Pioneers grabbed a 21-18 lead late in the set. Back-to-back kills by Ruch and Kayla Haynes and a DU error tied the match back up at 21. Omaha got to set point on a kill by Limback. After a DU kill to get the Pioneers within 24-23, Limback closed the door on any chance of the Pioneers tying the set with a kill to give the Mavericks a 25-23 win.
Limback paced Maverick attack with six kills, followed by five from Ruch. Clarkson tossed out 15 of her 44 assists in the third set as the Mavericks hit .263 as a unit. Boe led the Pioneers with four kills while Andrich added three kills.
Inside the Fourth Set
After trading points back-and-forth to a tie at 11, the Pioneers snagged the lead and held a 24-20 advantage over the Mavericks. Omaha fought off four straight set-point opportunities for Denver behind kills from Claire Leonard and Limback and a pair of DU errors. Trailing 25-24, Blaschko rattled off three consecutive kills to clinch the match for Omaha.
Omaha hit a match-best .273 in the set with Blaschko and Ruch leading the way with six kills each. Poulter led the Pioneers with four kills as Denver hit .211 in the match with 14 kills. The fourth set included eight ties and five lead changes.
The Mavericks are set to play their first matches of the season at Baxter Arena this weekend. Omaha hosts Kansas City at 11 a.m. on Sunday and 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
