UNO Volleyball loses in five sets at Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. – The Omaha volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Oral Roberts on the road Tuesday evening.

The Mavericks took the first and third sets, but ultimately fell 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 12-15. With the loss, Omaha falls to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in league play, while Oral Roberts improves to 5-12 and 1-2 in the conference.

•    Anna Blaschko tied her career-high of 19 kills for the second time this season.
•    Omaha was handed its first Summit League loss of the season by ORU.
•    The Mavericks are now 2-5 in five-set matches this season.
•    Omaha still searches for its first road victory of the season (0-4).

Both teams were neck-and-neck during the opening set. Omaha eventually fell into a 15-11 hole and eventually had to take a timeout. The Mavericks were eventually able to rally back and close the frame out on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-21.

Oral Roberts was able to even the score up at 1-all with a 20-25 win in the second set. A slew of runs proved to be the story of the second frame. Omaha went on a 5-1 run to open the set, but ORU countered with a 4-0 run and evened it up at 5-all. An 11-1 Oral Roberts run put them up 16-10 in the set. Omaha fought back and pulled the deficit to within two, but the Golden Eagles stayed ahead and eventually pulled out the five-point win.

Omaha opened on a 10-2 run and never looked back from there. The Mavericks cruised and led by as many as 10 (18-8) after kills by Blaschko and Claire Leonard. Another 4-0 spurt late in the set put the Mavericks ahead 23-13. From there, Omaha sealed the final two points on a Golden Eagle service error and a Sadie Limback kill.

The Mavericks played catchup for the majority of the fourth frame when a 5-1 ORU run put them in a 10-7 hole. Omaha was able to tie the score on six separate occasions, but could not take the lead. With the score tied at 21-all, Oral Roberts closed it out on a 4-0 run to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.

The Golden Eagles built a 3-1 lead early on and eventually increased the Omaha deficit to four (7-3). The Mavericks, however, clawed themselves back into a 1-point game three separate times, but ORU kept responding. Two-straight kills by Blaschko cut the score to 13-12, but Oral Roberts was able to muster two points and escape with the 15-13 victory.

Omaha shifts its focus to its next road contest in Summit League action. The Mavericks battle the South Dakota Coyotes this Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. For more information, visit
