UNO Volleyball knocks off Northern Iowa

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha volleyball collected its first win of the season on Saturday night with a 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23) over UNI at Sapp Fieldhouse.

The win moves the Mavericks to 1-1 on the season while the Panthers drop to 0-2.

Leaders for Omaha
Sadie Limback hit at a blistering pace of .419 to lead the Mavericks with a match-high 15 kills. McKenna Ruch picked up where she left off at Creighton, coming one dig short of a second straight double-double with 14 kills and nine digs on Saturday night.

Anna Blaschko added 10 kills with a team-high four blocks. Sami Clarkson notched a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs while Claire Mountjoy totaled a team-high 17 digs.

Leaders for UNI
Emily Holterhaus led the Panthers with a 13 kill, 14 dig double-double performance. Tayler Alden handed out 32 assists while Baylee Petersen notched a team-high 16 digs. Yagmur Cinel tallied nine kills while Kaylissa Arndorfer added seven kills and six digs.

Team Stats
Omaha hit .146 to UNI’s .140. The Panthers recorded an 8-5 advantage in blocks over the Mavericks.

Omaha hit a match-best .310 in the third set. The Maverick defense stifled UNI in the middle sets, limiting the Panthers to hitting percentages of .083 and .088 in the second and third sets, respectively.

Inside the First Set
After clinging to a 13-12 lead halfway through the set, the Panthers went on a 12-6 rally to take the first set over the Mavericks, 25-18.

Ruch and Limback led Omaha with five kills apiece in the opening set. UNI posted six blocks and had a balanced attack of four Panthers with at least two kills.

Inside the Second Set
Kills from Blaschko and Claire Leonard, a pair of UNI errors and an ace by Jordan Stalpes propelled the Mavericks to a 13-6 lead over UNI. The Panthers climbed back and snagged a 15-13 lead after reeling off a 9-0 run. Trailing 17-16, the Mavericks capitalized on four UNI errors and an ace by Mountjoy to grab a 21-17 lead. Ruch tallied back-to-back kills to clinch the 25-21 second-set win.

The Mavericks hit .125 as a team while holding the Panthers to .083. Ruch, Limback and Leonard totaled three kills apiece, followed by a pair from Blaschko. Omaha recorded five aces in the set, led by two from Mountjoy. The second set featured seven ties and four lead changes.

Inside the Third Set
Following a second-set win, Omaha jumped out to a 10-5 lead over the Panthers. With a 12-9 lead, the Mavericks went off for six straight points, led by four kills by Limback in that stretch. UNI got back within six at 19-13 but Omaha held on for the 25-16 win.

Omaha hit .310 as a team in the set and was led by five kills by Limback. Ruch added three kills, followed by two from Blaschko. The Maverick defense limited the Panthers to .088 hitting in the set to grab the 2-1 lead.

Inside the Fourth Set
Omaha and UNI remained with three points of each other for the nearly the entire fourth set. Tied at 20, the Mavericks scored two straight points before UNI answered with two consecutive points of their own to tie the match back at 22. A UNI error and Limback’s kill gave the Mavericks a 24-22 lead before Blaschko won the match with the game-clinching kill to hand Omaha a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Blaschko had a team-leading five kills to pace the Omaha offense. Holterhaus tallied six kills and four digs to carry the Panthers.

What’s Next
The Mavericks begin Summit League action next weekend at Denver. Omaha is set to play the Pioneers on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. and on Monday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.
