UNO spikers drop five setter to KC

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha volleyball team fell in five sets (14-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 13-15) against Kansas City on Monday night at Baxter Arena.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 3-3 (2-2 Summit League) while the Roos improve to 3-1 (3-1).

Leaders for Omaha
Sadie Limback led the Mavericks with season-high 18 kills while hitting .390. McKenna Ruch had nine kills and 13 digs while Alexa Blase added a season-high nine kills and a pair of digs.

Sami Clarkson notched a double-double with 39 assists and 15 digs. Claire Mountjoy had a team-high 26 digs and handed out seven assists.

Leaders for Kansas City
Melanie Brecka had a team-high 17 kills, followed by De’Janae Arnold with 11 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Alex Ratzlaff totaled 10 kills, seven service aces and 27 digs.

Team Stats
Omaha hit .171 to Kansas City’s .189. The Maverick edged the Roos in blocks, 8-6. Omaha totaled 55 kills with 78 digs and six service aces. KC had 56 kills and 83 digs as a team with 11 service aces.

Inside the First Set
The Mavericks and Roos were locked in a tie at seven until KC used an 11-3 run to take an 18-10 lead. A kill by Anna Blaschko got the Mavericks within eight at 21-13, but the Roos held on for a 25-14 win.

KC hit .214 in the first-set victory with five service aces. Rylee Marshall posted a pair of kills with five Mavericks recorded one kill.

Inside the Second Set
Leading 16-15, Omaha four of the next five points to stretch the lead to 20-16, prompting a KC timeout. Blaschko hammered home a kill to get the Mavericks to 24 before McKenna Ruch’s kill gave Omaha a slim 25-23 victory.

Limback garnered seven kills while hitting .636. Ruch chipped in four kills for Omaha, followed by a trio of kills from Marshall.

Inside the Third Set
Omaha jumped out to an 9-4 lead before the Roos climbed back to go ahead 14-13. Back-to-back KC kills extended the Kansas City lead to 22-16 as the Roos held on for a 25-18 win.

Limback hit .667 with four kills and Alexa Blase added three kills for the Mavericks. Odyssey Warren had four kills and Ratzlaff tallied three kills and a pair of service aces for Kansas City.

Inside the Fourth Set
Kansas City led 5-1 until Blase’s kill tied it up at seven. Tied at 18, Omaha reeled off three straight points behind kills from Ruch and Blaschko and a service ace by Blase. Marshall’s kill set up set point for the Mavericks while a kill by Limback clinched the set for the Mavericks and forced the set into a fifth set.

Omaha hit .186 as a team while Blase collected five of her kills in the fourth set. Blaschko and Limback combined for five kills while Clarkson assisted on nine of Omaha’s 13 kills.

Inside the Fifth Set
Facing a 13-8 deficit, Omaha scored three straight points on kills by Limback and Ruch and an attack error on the Roos. A kill by Brecka got the KC lead to 14-11 before the Mavericks got back within one behind Limback’s kill and a KC error.

An Omaha service error clinched the five-set victory for Kansas City. Limback paced the Maverick attack with four kills while Mountjoy recorded seven digs in the final set.

What’s Next
The Mavericks travel to Vermillion, S.D., for two matches at South Dakota on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 14-15.
