UNO drops doubleheader to Kansas

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha baseball team suffered a pair of losses in a twin bill vs. Kansas on Saturday at Tal Anderson Field. The Mavericks fell 9-0 in game one and 10-7 in game two against the Jayhawks.

The Mavericks are now 5-8 on the season while the Jayhawks improve to 8-6.

Game One: Kansas 9, Omaha 0
How It Happened

  • Kansas scored one run in the third before breaking open the game in the seventh with three runs on three hits and a Maverick error.
  • The Jayhawks tacked on four more runs in the eighth on a pair of hits and two Omaha errors.
  • KU scored its final run with a solo homer in the top of the ninth.

Inside the Box Score

  • Brett Bonar went 2-for-4 with a double while six other Mavericks had a hit.
  • Starter Richie Holetz fell to 1-1 on the season after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and striking out eight Jayhawks in six innings of work.
  • Tanner Howe tossed one scoreless inning in relief before Jarrett Blunt threw the final two innings.

How It Happened

  • The Jayhawks opened the scoring with a pair of runs on three hits and a Maverick error in the top of the first.
  • Omaha got the runs back in the bottom of the first when Chris Esposito brought Harrison Denk home on an RBI double and Bonars RBI single scored Mike Boeve.
  • An RBI groundout and an RBI single gave KU a 4-2 lead after four innings of play.
  • The Mavericks cut the deficit in half when Espositos RBI single brought home Matt Bondarchuk in the fifth.
  • Kansas got an RBI single, RBI double and a sacrifice fly to grab a 7-3 lead over the Mavericks in the top of the sixth.
  • A bases-loaded walk and sac fly grew the lead to 9-3 for KU in the seventh.
  • Boeve began the bottom of the eighth with a ground-rule double before scoring on an RBI triple by Esposito.
  • Esposito raced home on Bonars sac fly to make it 9-5 before the Jayhawks responded with a run in the ninth.
  • Denks RBI single scored Masen Prososki and Boeves RBI triple brought home Denk to get the Mavericks within three, but KU held on for a 10-7 victory.
