BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha baseball team wrapped up the weekend series with a pair of losses at South Dakota at Erv Huether Field on Sunday afternoon in Brookings, S.D. The Mavericks lost 6-0 in game before dropping game two, 9-8.

The losses move the Mavericks to 12-16 (7-5 Summit League) while South Dakota State improves to 9-19 (4-8).

Game One: SDSU 6, Omaha 0 (F/7)
How it Happened

  • SDSU had an RBI single in the first and added a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single in the second to take a 4-0 lead over Omaha.
  • The Jackrabbits scored a run in the third on a sacrifice fly to expand the lead to 5-0.
  • After a scoreless fourth, SDSU scored its final run on a solo homer in the fifth.

How it Happened

  • Keil Krumwiede opened the second with a single to right before coming around to score on a wild pitch to give the Mavericks an early one-run lead.
  • SDSU grabbed the lead in the fourth after scoring on a wild pitch and a Maverick fielding error.
  • Krumwiede cranked a two-run homer to right in the top of the six, giving the lead back to Omaha.
  • Following Krumwiedes homer, Bonar reached on a walk and Goldston unleashed a two-run home run to right, stretching the Maverick lead to 5-2 in the sixth.
  • Omaha continued the scoring in the sixth after Masen Prososkis RBI single scored Garrett Kennedy.
  • The Jackrabbits got one run back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double.
  • Parker Smejkals RBI double in the top of the ninth brought home Esposito made it a 7-3 ballgame.
  • Smejkal advanced to third on a single and scored on a fielders choice to grow the lead to 8-3 heading in to the bottom of the ninth.
  • A hit by pitch with the bases loaded and a sac fly brought the Jackrabbits within three before an RBI double cut the Maverick lead to 8-6.
  • SDSU won the game with a walk-off three run homer to earn the series split.

  • Krumwiede led the Mavericks at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Goldston went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run while Smejkal tallied two hits.
  • Jayden Maifeld threw five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out four in his first career start on the mound at Omaha.
  • Jarret Blunt tossed two innings of scoreless relief while Josiah Scott and Tanner Howe combined to throw the next inning in relief.
  • Easton Smith dropped to 0-3 on the season after allowing two runs on two hits and only recording one out.

On Deck
Omaha steps out of Summit League play next week as the Mavericks welcome BYU for a three-game series at Tal Anderson Field. The Mavericks and Cougars are set to play at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, April 15-16 while wrapping up the series on Saturday, April 17 at noon.
