Three top 10 finishers power Bulldogs to Goette Classic title

BLAIR, Neb. – For the second time in roughly a year’s span, the Concordia University Women’s Golf program has claimed a tournament title. The Bulldogs out-paced a field of six squads at Tuesday (Sept. 22)’s Matthew Goette Fall Classic hosted by College of Saint Mary. The Bulldogs shot a team score of 357 while in action at River Wilds Golf Club in Blair, Neb.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s program also won the Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Classic in September of last year. With Muller accompanying the men’s golf team in Kansas, graduate assistant coach Kelly Daniels oversaw Tuesday’s round.

Said Muller, “Our goal is definitely to finish top two in the conference. We took care of business today. I’m proud of the way the women played. Just talking to Coach Daniels it sounded like a pretty tough setup today with the scores across the board a little bit higher. Having the low individual at 81 shows how tough the course was playing, but I’m proud of the ladies. Any time you have three players in the top 10 you have a pretty good chance to do well on the team side.”

Just a few days removed from seizing the individual title at the Lila Frommelt Classic, Kendra Placke tied for second with an 11-over-par 83 (two strokes off the tournament champion). Placke and teammates Andrea Peterson (tied for fourth) and Lauren Havlat (tied for ninth) each earned tournament medals for placing in the top 10. Peterson shot an 88 while Havlat carded a 90. Placke has placed in the top 10 in 14 of 16 career tournaments.

Four additional Bulldogs were part of the field of 40 golfers: Logan Eschliman (96; 13th), Emily Jensen (102; T-20th), Ashley Gerczynski (106; T-24th) and Mya Nurse (107; 27th).

Concordia will have one final outing prior to the fall portion of the GPAC Championships (Oct. 5-6). The Bulldogs will be at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake, Iowa, on Saturday for the Buena Vista University Fall Invite. The first tee time is set for 11 a.m. CT.
