Northeast sweeps doubleheader from Hesston

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team swept Hesston College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, 3-1 and 6-3 thanks to dominant starting pitching performances at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.

The Hawks (9-10) were led by Nate Zyzda (Sioux City, Iowa) in the first game who tossed a complete-game three-hitter. The freshman struck out four batters and walked one after facing just 28 batters.

Northeast scored in the bottom of the second and third innings and again in the bottom of the sixth. Brennen Bales (Nebraska City, Neb.) went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a walk. Ben Prediger (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Spencer Weber (Bennington, Neb.) each tallied a hit in the win.

In the final game of the evening, Jeremy Schneider (Lovell, Wyo.) toed the rubber and tossed five hits, allowing just two hits, while striking out five batters.

Derek Botaletto (Omaha, Neb.) went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk. Cooper Whitt (Knoxville, Tenn.) added two hits and an RBI, while Colin Lynam (Springfield, Neb.) tallied a double and an RBI.

Northeast Community College announced on Thursday that all outside events and activities, including athletic events will be postponed until March 22 due to the spread of COVID-19 (Cornavirus).
