NORFOLK, Neb. – Five players scored in double figures for the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough as Southeast Community College held off the Hawks (11-13, 1-4 ICCAC), 101-96 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
It was a back-and-forth affair for much of the contest and it was the Hawks the ultimately took a four-point lead heading into halftime. The Storm gained momentum in the opening minutes of the second half, forcing the Hawks to fight back the rest of the way. The Storm’s stout defensive effort forced the Hawks to commit 18 turnovers that resulted in 23 points.
Emmette Page (Crystal, Minn.) tallied 21 points and 10 assists. Daniel Akuei (Melbourne, Australia) added 19 points and seven boards, while Ben Moxness (Scribner, Neb.) pitched in 15 points and five rebounds. Luke Rollman (Humphrey, Neb.) recorded 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Michael Anderson (Lincoln, Neb.) had 10 points and seven boards.
The Hawks shot 50 percent from the field and 58 percent from the three-point line. Southeast hit 48 percent of its shots from the field and only 20 percent from deep.
The Hawks welcome Marshalltown Community College for an ICCAC showdown at 7 p.m. Saturday in Norfolk.
NORFOLK, Neb. – Beth Matas (Girona, Spain) and Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) have become the one-two scoring punch for the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team.
Both scored more than 20 points on Wednesday night as the Hawks (23-3, 2-1 ICCAC) topped Southeast Community College, 85-57 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
Matas led all scorers with 23 points and six assists, while Moore added 20 points and four rebounds.
The Hawks put the game out of reach early after taking a 32-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Northeast kept building on its lead, taking a 52-24 lead at halftime and came out of the break scoring 20 more in the third quarter to keep the Storm from gaining any momentum.
Emina Hadzihusejnovic (Mostar, Bosnia) recorded 12 points and eight rebounds, while Breanna Stouffer (David City, Neb.) had 11 points and nine boards.
The Hawks shot 48 percent from the field and 55 percent from beyond the arc.
Northeast jumps back into ICCAC play, taking on Marshalltown Community College at 5 p.m. Saturday in Norfolk.
