SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The phrase “no need to reinvent the wheel” would have been appropriate for Morningside College Saturday, Nov. 2.
Less than 24 hours after the trio of senior forward/center Sydney Hupp (SR/O’Neill, NE) (O’Neill, Neb.), junior guard Sierra Mitchell (JR/Pleasant Hill, IA) (Pleasantville, Iowa), and sophomore forward Sophia Peppers (SO/Exira, IA) (Exira, Iowa) helped head coach Jamie Sale‘s squad push past the 100-point mark during night one of the 2019 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference – Great Plains Athletic Conference Challenge, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ No. 19-ranked Maroon received more top-notch accolades from the group. Peppers tossed in a single-game career-high 27 points, hitting on 10 of 18 field-goal attempts which included a three-of-four effort from outside the arc; Hupp compiled a second successive and 10th career double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds to go with two blocked shots and four assists; and Mitchell, the ever-steady dead eye from outside the arc, showed her wares again to the fans gathered at Briar Cliff University’s Newman Flanagan Center, tallying 19 points due in large part to a four-of-eight effort from three-point range.
Sale’s team needed every bit of its talented trio’s totals. National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ No. 17-ranked Saint Xavier University put together a 23-6 run in the middle section of the first half to build as large as a 10-point advantage. Mside battled back behind a 54-39 second-half roll that was aided by a critical 13-4 run down the stretch to seal an 89-78 victory. The Mustangs’ starting standouts weren’t the only ones contributing, as sophomore guard Taylor Rodenburgh (SO/Hawarden, IA) (Hawarden, Iowa) turned in an impressive six-point, nine-rebound, two-assist line, and freshman guard Olivia Larsen (FR/Fonda, Iowa) (Newell, Iowa) collected five points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Morningside looks to continue its unbeaten 2019-20 start Thursday, Nov. 7. They travel to Des Moines for a clash with Heart of America Conference foe Grand View College. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
