Midland Baseball sweeps Valley City State in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Midland University baseball took to the turf at US Bank Stadium on Thursday morning for an early doubleheader with Valley City State University. The Warriors earned the sweep with a 10-3 win in game one and a 2-1 walk-off nail biter in the second game.

Midland improves to 9-8 on the year while Valley City drops to 4-7 overall.

Game One: Midland 10, Valley City 3

The Warriors scored early and often, going up 2-0 after a liner from Peyton Garbers reached the center field wall and scored Sam Braun and Chase ReynoldsMatt Abdelnour would get on with a walk, and an infield single from Dakota Thorton loaded the bases. Peterson stepped up with two down and sent a single to right field, bringing in another pair of runs to extend the lead to 4-0. The final run of the inning would come by way of a Weber single, bringing the lead to 5-0 after one inning.

James Scurto commanded the pitching mound through the next few frames as the senior didn’t allow a single batter to reach base until the fourth inning. Valley City went to work in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of extra-base hits to score three runs with two outs on the board. Scurto regrouped in the following innings, holding Midland’s lead at 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Midland’s first two batters got on by way of a single and a walk, and the bases would become loaded thanks to a hit by pitch. Braun stepped up to the plate with one out and drove a double to the left fielder, bring in two runs. Reynolds followed up with a bases-clearing single to bring the score to 9-2. The final run of the inning came after a double from Harold Urban scored Reynolds from second. The hit was the first of Urban’s career. Scurto faced the minimum in the top of the seventh to pick up a complete-game win.

Game Two: Midland 2, Valley City 1

The second game of the matchup was a pitcher’s duel through the opening frames as the first hit of the contest didn’t come until a Valley City double in the fourth. The VCSU baserunner would advance on a passed ball and score the first run of the game thanks to a sacrifice fly. Midland’s Braun led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, but the Warriors were unable to capitalize and continued trailing into the bottom of the sixth.

Brendon Jones led off the sixth with a liner to right field and was advanced to second base after a well-executed sac bunt from Weber. Jones advanced to third after a groundout and scored the tying run after a clutch two-out triple from Reynolds. Valley City’s pitcher picked up a strikeout to close out the inning with the game knotted at 1-1. Tyler Seebaum struck out a pair in the seventh to preserve the tie.

The Warriors stepped up the plate in the seventh with a game plan, and it was executed to perfection with three-straight singles to load the bases. Jones stepped up to the plate with one out and provided a veteran at-bat, walking on five pitches to bring home the walk-off game-winner.
