ORANGE CITY, Iowa – For the second straight day, Midland University and Northwestern College squared off in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) doubleheader. After splitting a pair of games in Fremont on Friday, the teams met up in Orange City on Saturday for two more. Like the first day, Northwestern took the opener (2-0) and Midland won the finale (11-2).

Game One: Northwestern 2, Midland 0

It was a classic pitchers battle in the first game on Saturday evening as each starter went the distance, pitching a complete game. Midlands Steven Boyd pitched 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits, and striking out four Raider batters. His counterpart went 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits to the Warriors and struck out one.

The only scoring in the game came during the home half of the 4th inning as Northwestern pushed a pair of Raiders across home. They led off the inning with a single and then with two outs, a walk put a second runner aboard and a double to left-center by the next batter plated both runners.

Game Two: Midland 11, Northwestern 2

In game two, the Warriors quickly put their offensive struggles from game one behind them. Just three pitches into the first inning, Dakota Thornton turned on a pitch and put it just over the left-field fence giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Two batters later, Sam Braun launched another ball over the left-field fence marking the eighth game this season that the Warriors have recorded multiple home runs.

In the second inning, Chase Reynolds kept the good times rolling as he sent a shot over the left-field fence and extended the Warriors lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, after he singled to centerfield to get on base, Thornton scored his second run of the game when Kyle Weber was walked with the bases loaded.

Midland tacked on two more runs in the third inning as Connor Petersen drove in Trey NicholsMaddux Miyasato, who advanced to third on the hit, scored on a throwing error.

Northwestern gained ground with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Midland immediately erased that momentum during an error-filled sixth inning in which Reynolds and Thornton both scored.

Matt Abdelnour would single to get on base following the runs and then a fourth error by the Raiders in the inning allowed Braun to reach base. Then Harold Urban drove both runners to extend the lead to 10-2.

The Warriors recorded their fourth home run of the contest in the eighth inning as Trey Nichols connected on the first pitch of his at-bat.

Tyler Seebaum started the game on the mound for the Warriors before being relieved by Reynolds after four innings of work. Reynolds earned the win, his second of the season.
