Kirkwood takes doubleheader from Hawks baseball

NORFOLK, Neb. – A 5-1 lead wasn’t enough for the Northeast Community College baseball team on Saturday. 

The Hawks (18-16, 12-8 ICCAC) managed to score early in Game 1, but it wasn’t enough as Kirkwood Community College doubled up Northeast, 13-5 and 18-7 in ICCAC play at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk. 

The Hawks cruised through the first three innings, until the Eagles added an eight spot in the top of the fourth inning. Kirkwood went on to added two runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings.  

Parker Dorrance (Arvada, Colo.) went 3-for-4 with a run, a double and an RBI. Tyler Monroe (Lincoln, Neb.) was 2-for-4 with a run, while Maximo DeLeon (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) added a home run. Jeremy Schneider (Lovell, Wyo.) took the loss, tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowing six earned runs off six hits. He struck out four batters and walked four. 

Kirkwood jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and kept the Hawks in check for much of Game 2. The Hawks managed to add five runs and bat around in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles tallied five runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  

Sam Manwarren (Overland Park, Kan.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Maxim Fullerton (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Dorrance added a double. Christian Carew (Parker, Colo.) took the loss after throwing one and one-thirds innings, giving up three earned runs off one hit. He also walked two batters. 

The Hawks face Kirkwood at 12 and 3 p.m. tomorrow in Norfolk.
