IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Grant Leonard was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason Second-Team All-American, it was announced Thursday by the NCBWA. It is Leonards second preseason honor as he was named a preseason third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball in December.

The Mokena, Illinois, native earned the preseason distinction after setting a school record with 14 saves during the 2019 season. Leonard finished the season with a 2-3 record and 3.37 ERA over 34 2/3 innings en route to second-team All-Big Ten honors.

The right-handed pitcher was named to the NCBWA Midseason Closer of the Year List in 2019 and finished his junior season ranked second in the Big Ten in saves and 10th in appearances (28). He was a perfect 14-of-14 in save opportunities.

Leonard enters his senior season with 16 career saves, which are the fifth most in school history.

The Hawkeyes open the 2020 season at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Punta Gorda, Florida, on Feb. 14 against Kent State.
