Iowa State Women drop game at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 21 West Virginia (14-2, 8-2 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (11-7, 7-4 Big 12), 65-56, Wednesday night in Morgantown, W.Va.

Kysre Gondrezick led all players with 24 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter to help the Mountaineers pull away for their eighth conference victory.

Ashley Joens poured in a team-high 17 points for the Cyclones and led the squad in rebounds (9) and assists (4). Aubrey Joens buried a trio of 3-pointers, all in the first half, en route to nine points.

Poor shooting and the inability to get to the free-throw line doomed the Cyclones. ISU shot just 34 percent from the floor and attempted only four free-throws to WVU’s 18.

The Cyclones scored the first basket of the game, but the Mountaineers quickly took the lead and maintained it for the rest of the quartre. Iowa State shot poorly in the first half (10-for-31, 32 pct.), but WVU went through a 1-for-16 stretch to keep within striking distance at halftime (27-26)

The Joens sisters combined for 19 of ISU’s 26 first half points.

WVU stretched its lead to nine points (35-26) with eight-straight points to open the second half and entered the final stanza with a 48-41 advantage.

The Cyclones were unable to trim the deficit below six points while the Mountaineers led by as many as 12 points in the final period.

Iowa State returns home to face Texas Tech on Saturday. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. CT.
