Iowa State sweeps K-State

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) was able to finish the first half of Big 12 play on a high, sweeping Kansas State (7-13, 2-6 Big 12) 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16) on Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones’ serve and pass improved dramatically, as ISU recorded nine service aces while only conceding one on the evening. Michal Schuler led that effort with four aces, while Candelaria Herrera and Eleanor Holthaus had two each.

The ISU attack was led by 12 kills from Annie Hatch, and Herrera’s 11 kills at .500 hitting. Piper Mauck recorded a career-high eight kills. The back-row was led by 15 digs from Michal Schuler, who was back in the libero position for the Cyclones.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 20
The first set belonged to the respective offenses, as both teams were able to find the floor at strong rates. The Cyclone breakthrough came mid-way through the frame, as a 5-1 run turned a 10-9 K-State lead into a 14-11 Cyclone advantage. The Wildcats got back within one at 18-17, but ISU strung together three-straight to pull ahead for good. ISU hit .361, cancelling out a solid K-State attack which finished the first at .265 hitting. The Cyclones claimed the first when Candelaria Herrera killed off the block at 25-20, ISU.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 23
K-State racked up the first five points of the set, but its lead was quickly erased with the Cyclones claiming 10 of the next 11 points to move ahead 10-6. The home team got ahead 16-10 before Kansas State went on a 6-0 run thanks to four Cyclone attack errors to tie it again at 16-16. Three more ISU attack errors allowed the Cats to get ahead 19-17, but Schuler’s third ace of the night tied it again at 19s. Herrera killed down the line two-straight times to get the Cyclones to set point at 24-22, and converted it when K-State’s Dru Kuck served into the net at 25-23, ISU.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 16
Powered by another Schuler ace, Iowa State won the first three points of the set and did not look back. The Cyclones fired four service aces in the third frame, with Herrera contributing a pair. ISU went on a 4-0 run to push the lead out to 4-0, and then, behind the serve of Herrera, launched a 5-0 run which put ISU ahead at 23-13. The Cyclones wrapped up the match when Kate Shannon came in to fire ISU’s ninth ace of the night at 25-16.

Player of the Match
Candelaria Herrera. While the Cyclone block was kept quiet on Saturday, recording just 2.0 total blocks, Herrera let her offense do the talking on the night. The junior finished with 11 kills and no errors on 22 swings for .500 hitting. She also posted five digs and two service aces in the win.

Iowa State hits the road again next week, starting with a trip to TCU on Wednesday. First serve in Fort Worth between the Cyclones and Horned Frogs will be at 7 p.m.
