Iowa State Men lose regular season finale to K-State

March 9th, 2020 | Beth Rogers

MANHATTAN, Kansas – A short-handed Iowa State (12-19, 5-13 Big 12) wrapped up the regular season with a 79-63 loss to Kansas State (10-21, 3-15 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum.

Starter Rasir Bolton joined Tyrese Haliburton on the sidelines, with ISUs depth becoming even more tested by foul trouble and an injury to Prentiss Nixon throughout the contest.

In defeat, Iowa State was led by Solomon Young, who was in double figures for the seventh time in the past nine games with 17 points. Joining him in double figures was Terrence Lewis, who finished with 11. Michael Jacobson just missed out on a double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds.

How It Happened
The Cyclones were trailing from the first possession, finding themselves in an early 10-4 hole. ISU was able to get back within one at 10-9 on a Terrence Lewis bucket, but the Wildcats pressed back ahead with an 8-0 run to get ahead 18-9. The shots were not falling for the Cyclones, who went just 6-of-24 (25 percent) in the first half, while the Wildcats were shooting over 50 percent. K-State went on a 14-1 run which helped push the lead into double figures at 32-16.

Down 18 to begin the second half, the visitors were able to cut the Kansas State lead down to 15, but the momentum was short-lived as the Wildcats continued to roll on offense, upping the lead to 24 in the second period. The thinning of the lineup continued to be an issue, with Tre Jackson fouling out with 12 minutes to go and Prentiss Nixon leaving the game with an injury moments later. Terrence Lewis also fouled out at the 7:36 mark, reducing ISU to five available scholarship players to close out the game.

While the Iowa State offense improved in the second half, going 15-of-31 (48.4 percent), turnovers were still a problem, as the Cyclones committed 11 in the second half and 19 for the game.

Players of Note
Solomon Young led the Cyclone offense again, finishing with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting while converting 5-of-7 free throws. Young also notched three steals and three rebounds.

Terrence Lewis came off the bench to record 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, his seventh game in double figures this season. He also had two assists and a rebound in 20 minutes of action.

Iowa States foul and injury issues meant an extended run-out for walk-on Nate Jenkins. Having played only 11 minutes all season heading into Saturday, Jenkins played 11 for the Cyclones against the Wildcats, finishing with two points, two rebound and an assist.
