NORMAN, Oklahoma – Iowa State (10-14, 3-8 Big 12) was able to hold tough, but was unable to overcome Oklahoma (16-8, 6-5 Big 12) as the Sooners prevailed 90-61 Wednesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Iowa State had a solid first half against the Sooners, but were unable to find the needed baskets, as a 12-2 run around the end of the first half and the start of the second half was key for OU. The Cyclone bench in particular stepped up, with Terrence Lewis leading the way with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He was joined in double figures by Solomon Young (12) and Prentiss Nixon (10).
How It Happened
ISU got off to a slow start shooting, converting just two of its first nine shots as the Sooners rushed out to a seven-point lead in the first five minutes. The Cyclones began to find their shot, as 3-pointers by Terrence Lewis, Caleb Grill and Prentiss Nixon helped push the visitors ahead 18-17. The shooting touch also transitioned to the Sooners, as three treys in four possessions for OU but them back ahead 28-20.
Nixon, who entered the starting lineup for the now-sidelined Tyrese Haliburton, stepped into the role well. The redshirt senior notched eight points and five assists in the first half, with his second trey of the half cutting the OU lead to a point at 37-36. However, Oklahoma had the last laugh, with Austin Reaves hitting a 3-pointer in the final seconds to lead 40-36 at the break.
Oklahoma notched the first six points of the second half to up its lead to double figures. The Cyclones continued to stick around, cutting the OU advantage to seven at 58-51, but the Sooners continued to connect from deep, with Oklahoma eventually working its way ahead by 23 points, powered by a 16-2 run halfway through the second half.
Players of Note
Terrence Lewis had his best night as a Cyclone, as the junior finished with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He also had four rebounds.
Solomon Young was in double figures for the fifth time in the past seven games, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Prentiss Nixon stepped into the point guard position, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. It was Nixons first time in double figures since the Big 12 opener at TCU on Jan. 4
