AMES, Iowa – Solomon Young, Rasir Bolton and Tyrese Haliburton combined for 68 points in Iowa States (9-9, 2-4 Big 12) 89-82 win over Oklahoma State (9-9, 0-6 Big 12) Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The trio took over the game early and never let up, combining for 19-of-30 shooting, 10-of-15 shots from downtown and 20-of-23 at the charity stripe. Young finished the game with a career-high 27 points (7-8 FG, 13-15 FT) and grabbed nine rebounds.
Bolton and Haliburton took care of the perimeter, scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively. Bolton was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards and Haliburton tied a career high with six 3-pointers.
ISU outrebounded the Cowboys, 39-30 and made 51 percent of its shots, the first time in Big 12 play the Cyclones made over half of their shots.
How It Happened
Iowa State went up early thanks to a hot start by Bolton, who hit his first three shots from downtown to give the Cyclones a 16-9 lead with 13:18 left in the first half.
The Cyclones stretched their lead to 11 points (30-19) with 4:58 left in the half behind Young, who scored nine points in a seven-minute stretch. However, the Cowboys went on a 13-1 run for a brief lead until a couple of late 3-pointers by Haliburton allowed the Cyclones to go into halftime with a 37-35 lead.
Bolton and Haliburton helped the Cyclones increase their lead to 52-43 by combining for all nine points in a 9-1 run at the beginning of the second half. With under 10 minutes left in the second period the ISU lead grew to 66-53 thanks to a 10-2 run by the Cyclones.
The Cyclones led by as many as 15 points at one time, but the Cowboys slapped on a press and trimmed the lead to five points with under a minute left.
Iowa State was able to hold on thanks to shooting 84.8 percent from the foul line (28-33 FT) for the game.
Players of Note
Tyrese Haliburton was on fire from the perimeter, tying his career high with six 3-pointers and recording his sixth 20-point game (20) of the season. Haliburton also dished out six assists and grabbed six boards.
Solomon Young gave the Cyclones some juice from off the bench, scoring a career-high 27 points, including 17 in the second half. Young grabbed nine rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. It was the first time Young, who was 7-of-8 from the field, was in double-figuring scoring in Big 12 play this season. He was also 13-of-15 at the free-throw line.
