Iowa State Falls to No. 6 Penn State

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-2) battled hard, but fell to No. 6 Penn State (4-0) 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cylones had no answer for a PSU attack which picked up the pace as the night went on.

The loss to the Nittany Lions snapped Iowa State’s 10-match home winning streak. Leading ISU in defeat was junior Candelaria Herrera, who contributed 10 kills at .600 hitting. Setter Piper Mauck notched a double-double of 28 assists and 10 digs, her first of the season.

Set One: Penn State 25 Iowa State 22 
Iowa State jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the set, forcing a Penn State timeout. However, the lead didn’t last long as the Nittany Lions rallied to cut the lead down to one, 15-14. Penn State eventually knotted the set up at 20 apiece, later winning the set 25-22. Despite leading early, the Cyclones struggled to stave off Penn State’s potent attack, as they hit .333% on the set. Iowa State was led in the set by Candelaria Herrera, who had five kills.

Set Two: Penn State 25 Iowa State 16 
The Nittany Lions continued their momentum from the first set, starting the second set off with a 6-2 lead. They were then able to extend the lead to 13-5 with the help of four blocks. Penn State continued to be red-hot as they took the set 25-16. Herrera continued to play well for the Cyclones, as she had three kills on her three attempts and added a block assist.

Set Three: Penn State 25 Iowa State 16
Iowa State wasn’t able to stop Penn State early, as the Nittany Lions opened the set with a 10-5 lead. Penn State was then able to push the lead out to a comfortable 20-13 margin. Penn State went on to win the set and thereby the match with a set score of 25-16. The Nittany Lions hit for .455 on the final set, whereas Iowa State hit .059.
