The Wayne State College men’s basketball team could not overcome 56.5 percent shooting (35-62) from Ferris State as the Bulldogs defeated the Wildcats 100-78 Friday evening in the 2019-20 season opener for both teams at the CCA Division II Tip Off Classic in Orange, California.
The game was close early, featuring seven lead changes and three ties. But Ferris State closed the second half strong and built a 10-point lead on the Wildcats.
WSC had no chance of making a comeback in the second half as the Bulldogs drained 62.5 percent (20-32) shots in the second half as Ferris State finished with the 100-78 win.
The Wildcats held a 10-6 lead three minutes into the contest following a Jordan Janssen layup. But Ferris State scored the next nine points for a 15-10 lead at the 15:17 mark.
WSC responded with six straight points and took their final lead of the game at 16-15 on a Al’Tavius Jackson layup with 12:29 left in the half.
After Ferris State pushed the lead to nine at 29-20, the Wildcats reeled off nine straight points for the final tie of the night at 29-29 on a Nate Mohr 3-pointer with 6:00 left in the half.
But the Bulldogs closed the half on a 16-6 run and led 45-35 at intermission.
Ferris State opened the second half with a 10-3 run and took a 17-point lead at 55-38.
WSC was never able to cut the lead down to single digits in the second half, getting as close as 11 several time, before the hot shooting Bulldogs closed the half strong and ended with the 100-78 win.
Ferris State made 35 of 62 shots for 56.5 percent including 10 of 22 behind the arc for 45.5 percent. The Bulldogs were 20 of 29 (69%) at the charity stripe.
Wayne State made 23 of 51 shots from the field for 45.1 percent, going 6 of 15 from 3-point range and 26 of 35 at the free throw stripe.
Jordan Janssen led Wayne State with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and 7-11 at the charity stripe. He also led WSC on the boards with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Nate Mohr produced 17 points followed by Nick Ferrarini with 15 and Al’Tavius Jackson 12.
Ferris State won the rebounding battle over WSC 41-28 while WSC had one more turnover (16-15) than the Bulldogs.
Janssen, Ben Dentlinger and Mohr each had three assists while Janssen finished with two blocked shots.
Wayne State will face Concordia Irvine (Calif.) on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Central Time in the second game at the CCA Division II Tip Off Classic.
