UTICA – The Heartland Huskies and the Centennial Broncos opened the new year with a pair of varsity games.
The girls game featured 6-1 Centennial and 1-6 Heartland. Lady Broncos senior guard Kate Hirschfeld opened the first quarter with six points of her own and Centennial had a 12-6 lead.
By halftime, Centennial expanded their lead with five different players scoring in the quarter. In the end, the Broncos would pick up their seventh win of the season, closing out with a 58-18 win.
Hirschfeld finished with a game-high 15 points. Senior Asia Nisly added 11 points, and seniors Daylee Dey and Jaci Opfer had six points each. Heartland was led by senior Cassidy Siebert who finished with seven points.
The Huskies and Broncos boys matchup came down to the last shot. With less than one second to go, Centennial trailed by two points and junior Jake Bargen fired a three pointer from the left wing. It fell just off the mark and Heartland moved on to win 50-48.
Heartland led by nine points at the halftime break. Huskies junior Trajan Arbuck had 11 points at the half and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
In the fourth quarter, Bargen tried to will Centennial back in the game. He scored12 points in the final quarter alone, and had the shot at the buzzer that came up short. He finished with 13 points for the Broncos. Sophomore Maj Nisly had a game-high 16. Centennial with the loss moves to 5-3 on the season.
Heartland finished with three players with double-digit scoring. Arbuck led the way with 15 points, and sophomores Trev Peters and Jake Regier both had 14. Heartland moves to 5-2 on the season with the win.
