GACC Girls Win, Boys Lose vs Battle Creek

WEST POINT – Guardian Angels Central Catholic hosted Battle Creek in girls and boys varsity basketball Tuesday night, Jan. 21, as aired on 107.9 The Bull.

GACC won the girls game 60-52, while Battle Creek won the boys contest 55-49.

In the girls game, Battle Creek jumped out to an early 9-1 lead, and was up 14-8 after the first quarter.

GACC took its first lead at 17-16, while erupting for 25 points in the second quarter on their way to a 33-25 halftime lead.

Brenna Rief scored 14 points in the second quarter for GACC, including a pair of three pointers and a 4-4 performance at the free throw line.

The Bluejays outscored the Bravettes 14-13 in the third quarter, taking a 47-38 lead into the fourth.

Battle Creek outscored the Bluejays 14-13 in the fourth, but GACC was able to claim the win, 60-52.

Rief led all scorers with 24 points for GACC.

Riley Seifert and BriAnna Zohner each had 10 points for Battle Creek.

The Bluejay girls improve to 13-2 with the win.

In the boys game, the teams traded buckets early, before Battle Creek took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

Battle Creek was leading 26-17 late in the second quarter when GACCs Blake Pojar hit a three pointer at the buzzer to make it 26-20 at halftime, still in favor of the Braves.

Battle Creek outscored the Bluejays 15-14 in the third quarter, and led 41-34 heading into the fourth.

The Braves held a double digit lead early in the fourth, before GACC was able to pull within four points with just over three minutes to play.

Thats as close as the Bluejays would get however, as the Braves made free throws down the stretch to keep GACC at arms length, winning the game 55-49.

Nate Niewohner scored 11 points to lead GACC.

Battle Creek was 22-32 from the free throw line. Luke Stueve was the leading scorer with 14 points, and Slate Kraft added 12, including a 10-11 performance from the line.

The GACC boys are now 7-5 on the season.

Both GACC teams are next in action on Friday, hosting ONeill.
