Creighton Women defeat South Dakota State

Omaha, Neb. – A strong second half and 23 points from senior Jaylyn Agnew lifts the Creighton women’s basketball team to an 61-48 victory over South Dakota State on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in DJ Sokol Arena.

Creighton improves to 2-0 on the season with the win, while South Dakota State fell to 0-2.

The Bluejays got off to a strong starts making their first two baskets as junior Tatum Rembao opened the scoring with a layup and senior Olivia Elger hit the first of three first quarter three-pointers. A back-and-forth first 10 minutes saw the Jackrabbits hold a 15-11 lead.

Creighton battled back using a layup and four free throws from Agnew and a mid-range jumper and a pair of free throws from junior Temi Carda to give the Bluejays a 23-21 lead midway through the second quarter. South Dakota State ended the second period with a 6-0 run to take a 29-25 lead into the break.

Creighton started to heat up as the Bluejays erased their four point halftime deficit with a 14-2 run, scoring on their first six possessions of the second half to open up a 39-33 lead with 5:46 to play in the third quarter.  The Bluejays used five three-pointers in the quarter including three from Agnew, while Rembao and sophomore Payton Brotzki added one each, taking a 48-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Creighton extended its lead to eight at 56-48 as Elger hit a long three with 2:19 left in the game. The Bluejays extended their lead to as much as 13 at 61-48 with 12 seconds left as Carda made the front end of a pair of free throws to seal the Bluejay victory.

Agnew led all scorers with 23 points, while Carda added 13 points and nine rebounds. Creighton closed the night shooting 35 percent (20-57) from the field, including going 10-31 (32.3 percent) from behind the arc 11-15 from the charity strip. The Bluejays outrebounded the Jackrabbits 39-34 as Creighton grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. The Bluejays dished out 17 assists while South Dakota State dished out 11.

Myah Selland led the way for the Jackrabbits with 14 points, while Paiton Burckhard added 12 points of her own. South Dakota State ended the game shooting 38.8 percent (19-49) from the floor, going only 2-13 from three and 8-12 from the free throw line.

Creighton will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 16 as the Bluejays battle Drake at 6:00 pm in Des Moines, Iowa.
