WICHITA, Kan. — The Creighton softball team fell to Wichita State, 4-0, during the series finale on Sunday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 0-3, while the Shockers improved to 5-2.
Creighton managed four hits during the final game of the weekend, while Bluejay pitching forced Wichita State to leave nine runners on base.
The Shockers threatened in the bottom of the first and loaded the bases with only one out, but Creighton starting pitcher Parker Boyd recorded a strikeout and fly out to the warning track in left field to end the inning.
The Bluejays appeared to take the lead in the top of the second. Victoria Alvarez delivered a two-out single down the right-field line and crossed home plate on a double off the bat of Madeline Vejvoda, but the umpires met after the play and determined that Alvarez left first base early for the final out of the inning.
The Shockers stranded a runner at second base in the bottom half of the second before Vejvoda laced a double off the left-center field wall to start the top of the third inning. The freshman advanced to third on a ground out to the right side of the infield but did not score.
Boyd wiggled out of danger in the bottom of the third. Wichita State opened the inning with a line drive off the left-field wall for a base hit. Creighton left-fielder Courtney Sandell fielded the ball off the wall and threw a strike to second base before the Bluejays recorded the first out on a run down between first and second base as the Shockers attempted to stretch a single into a double. Boyd ended the frame with a strikeout after allowing a two-out walk.
Wilson started the fourth with a single off the glove of the Wichita State third baseman and Kiara Mills followed by reaching on an error. Mikaela Pechar produced a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Sam Alm attempted to squeeze pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer home from third but the Shocker pitcher calmly fielded a pop up bunt and doubled off Sawyer at third base.
Wichita State broke into the run column in the fourth with a pinch-hit two-RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays went down in order during the top of the fifth before the Shockers added to their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame.
Jena Lawrence came on in relief for Creighton with two outs in the last of the fifth. The freshman from Albia, Iowa gave up a double but ended the inning with a strikeout and stranded two runners in scoring position to keep the game at 3-0 in favor of Wichita State.
The Shockers hit their 13th home run of the weekend to extend their advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
Four different Bluejays recorded one hit a piece, while Vejvoda tallied Creighton’s lone extra-base hit with her third-inning double.
Boyd struck out four during 4 2/3 innings of work, and Lawrence tallied three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Creighton will head back on the road next weekend for the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Illinois. The Bluejays are scheduled to play five games in three days, beginning with a contest against UIC on Friday at 10 a.m.
