CCC’s Fall Sports Postponed; Winter Sports Delayed

July 14th, 2020 | Dewey Nelson

Central Community College athletics has announced that men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball have been postponed until the spring 2021 semester.

Additionally, all winter sports competition, which includes CCC men’s and women’s basketball, will begin in January with most championship seasons moved from March to April.

The announcement follows a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Board of Regents’ vote on Monday.

“We were hopeful our fall and winter sports would be on schedule to start in the regular timeframe, but this plan is well laid out and it has the safety and health of our student-athletes at the core of it,” said Mary Young, CCC athletic director. “We realize it is not perfect, but it is the best plan for our association and schools nationwide and it gives us hope.”

Along with the adjustments to competition season and championship dates, the NJCAA has made allowances for scrimmage and practice dates in the fall. Young believes this could be a real advantage.

“It is 60 days to improve athletically,” said Young, who is also serves as the Region IX women’s director. “Plus, the most important element is that it continues to allow our student-athletes to progress academically toward a degree.”

CCC’s established spring sports are golf and softball, which means that seven Raiders sports teams could be competing at the same time. While that will present multiple logistical challenges, Young is confident that the CCC athletic department will work together for the good of each team.

“I know our coaches will work together to continue to provide tremendous experiences for our student-athletes.”
