IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Nia Carter was named the Big Ten Softballs Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Carter batted .744 (10-14) in five games with four RBIs at the Hawaii Invitational. Carter recorded four multi-hit games, including a 3-for-3 performance against UMKC in the tournament finale on Sunday.

The Rancho Cucamonga, California, native raised her batting average to a team-high and Big-Ten leading .567.

Carters walk-off single on Feb. 21 helped Iowa defeat UMKC, 2-1.

Both honors are the first of her career and second for Iowa this season. Junior pitcher Lauren Shaw was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week Feb. 17. Iowas last Freshman of the Week was Allison Doocy on April 17, 2017.

This is the first time Iowa has had the same player win Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week honors.

The Hawkeyes bring their six-game winning streak to Madeira Beach, Florida, this weekend for the Spring Games. Iowa faces Miami (OH), FGCU, South Alabama, and FAU.
