Briar Cliff women’s volleyball head coach Lindsey Weatherford has announced the signing of Mikayla Castillo to her 2019 roster. Castillo is a familiar face to the BC head coach as Weatherford coached Castillo at Walden Grove High School in Sahuarita, Arizona.
“We are excited Kayla chose to attend BCU,” said Weatherford. “She has fought through some adversity and become successful in the classroom and on the volleyball court.
Castillo graduated from Walden Grove in 2016 and earned six varsity letters as a Red Wolf with three in volleyball and three in basketball. She also earned varsity letters at Deming High School, where she played her freshman seasons.
After high school graduation, Castillo played one season at Wentworth Military Academy, where she earned first-team all-region honors, set the school record for digs in a match and finished the season ranked nationally in total digs and digs per set. She also earned USCAA Player of the Week honors, was named Most Improved and was a team captain. When Wentworth closed she transferred to Pima Community College and earned an associate’s degree.
“Kayla’s ability to read hitters is what sets her apart from others at her position,” added Weatherford. “We are excited to add her experience, history of success and positive outlook to our squad.”
Castillo is the daughter of Mario and Loretta Rivera and has two sisters.
