Briar Cliff sweeps Presentation in Saturday Doubleheader

The Charger baseball team brought the broom to Bishop Mueller this weekend, going 2-0 Saturday to complete the series sweep over the Saints of Presentation. Briar Cliff beat Presentation 9-1 in game one before shutting them out in game two with an 11-0 win.

After two scoreless innings to start game one, the Cliff put up eight runs in the third to lead 8-1. The Chargers went through the lineup in the third frame, getting two RBIs from Jared Sitzmann and added two runs thanks to walks with loaded bases.

The Cliff would score their final run as Graham Palsma scored on a sac fly from Sitzmann in the bottom of the fourth.

Houston Hawkins gets the win on the bump, pitching five innings with six strikeouts and giving up one earned run. Ryan Pearson and Alex Kremer came in the final two frames to preserve the win. Sitzmanns three RBIs led the team and Matt Hmielewski had two hits.

The game two shutout was led by Nicholas Cole, who struck out six batters in five innings of work. Kyler SteinbornTyler Kjose and Austin Carter also saw time on the hill. The Charger pitching crew only gave up five hits in the contest.

The Cliff scored seven total runs between the third and fourth innings to take an 8-0 lead after four full frames. Jake Allen hit a two-run blast over the left field wall to account for two scores in the fourth and ended the game with three RBIs.

In total, the Chargers scored three runs via error in game two and two runs thanks to walks with loaded bases.

Briar Cliff outscored Presentation 32-5 over the four-game series and moves to 12-2 on the season.

The Chargers will open conference play against Northwestern Saturday, March 20 at Bishop Mueller Field in Sioux City.
