Briar Cliff Softball opens year with pair of wins

February 18th, 2020 | Beth Rogers

BC softball opened the 2020 season with two wins at the University of St. Mary (Kan.) Tuesday afternoon. BC dominated in game one with an 8-0 mercy rule victory in five innings and then held on for a 6-4 win in game two.

The Chargers scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to power themselves to the game one win. Bailey Nichols recorded one hit for two RBIs and scored two runs herself to lead the team. Freshmen Joselyn Chronic and Kennedy Andersen tallied a pair of hits each and Chronic crossed home plate twice.

Alayna Allen gets the win with three strikeouts and allowing just two hits and two walks.

BC got out ahead in game two and led 4-1 after five frames, but three scored runs by the Spires in the bottom of the sixth forced the Chargers to put runs up in the seventh. The Cliff did just that with runs by Johanna Vaske and Alexis Westercamp and the team was able to hold off St. Mary in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Alayna Allen was the winning pitcher in game two with 1.2 innings of work. Lanae Shiley started the game and Kayla Guerrero also saw time in the circle.

The Cliff starts the season 2-0 overall. The team will travel to Kansas again this coming weekend for games against Tabor and Bethel.
