22 points from both Austin Roetman and Jackson Lamb and another 17 from Jaden Kleinhesselink were not enough for the Briar Cliff mens basketball team Wednesday night in Jamestown, North Dakota as the Chargers fell 95-86 to the Jimmies.
The contest was in reach for the Cliff, down by just six with more than two minutes to play, but two offensive fouls by the Chargers in that time were wasted opportunities for BC.
“I loved the energy we played with in the first half, but unfortunately we werent able to sustain that for the entire game,” said head coach Mark Svagera. “We are looking forward to being back at home Saturday.”
Briar Cliff shot 59 percent from the field in the first half of the contest and led the Jimmies 45-39. Roetman had 15 points in the first 20 minutes and dished out his two assists of the night in the last 75 seconds of the period.
The teams were tied at 52 with 16 minutes left to play but Jamestown managed to go up by 14 points in the next eight minutes. Briar Cliff was able to cut that lead down to six but in the end could not overcome the deficit.
Lamb led all players with 11 rebounds on the night for a double-double. Roetman added seven boards and Kleinhesselink had six. Jake Carley dished out a team-high four assists.
Jack Talley put up 23 points for the Jimmies to go with nine boards. Five other Jimmies joined him in double-figures and Isaiah Dobson had seven assists.
The BC men have now dropped three-straight contests and their eighth of the GPAC season. The team is 11-9 overall and 2-8 in conference play. BC will host Concordia at 4 p.m. Saturday the Newman Flanagan Center.
The Briar Cliff womens basketball team suffered a 71-67 overtime loss to (RV) Jamestown Wednesday night in a contest that featured nine ties, 13 lead changes and 30 turnovers from each team. Despite the loss, freshman Konnor Sudmann was a force for the Chargers, pouring in a game-high 26 points to go with six boards, four steals, three assists and three blocks.
The teams went back-and-forth through the last moments of regulation as neither side led by more than two points in the final three minutes. Hannah Demars put the Jimmies up by two with 15 seconds to play, but a defensive foul by the home team on the next possession resulted in a pair of good free throws by Madelyn Deitchler to make the game 59-59 with 11 seconds on the clock. Jamestown had a chance for the win but Sudmann forced a steal in the last seconds to send the game to overtime.
“We competed like heck for the whole game,” said head coach Mike Power. “They did great to push the game to overtime, and I loved our effort, it was just hard to overcome 30 turnovers.”
The Jimmies led through the majority of the first half of the night, but never by more than five points and had a two-point lead after the first 20 minutes. A neck-and-neck third quarter showed a 43-39 advantage to Jamestown at the end of three periods.
Down by five with nine minutes to play, Sudmann scored five straight points for the seventh tie of the night at 46-all. Sudmann put the Chargers ahead for the first time of the fourth quarter with a layup at the 4:29 mark and made it a 3-point game with another two-point bucket at 3:48.
After forcing overtime, the Chargers gave up six-straight points to Jamestown and were unable to regain the lead. BC was able to tie the game again at 67, but the Jimmies scored the final four points of the game for the win.
Deitchler put up a 23-point performance and matched Sudmann in rebounds and assists. The sophomore was 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Breanna Allen had the next highest point total for the Cliff, going 3-for-4 from the 3-point line for nine points. The Chargers had a 42 percent success rate in field goal shooting, 31 percent from beyond the arc and 82 percent from the charity stripe.
Three players were in double-figures for Jamestown, led by Kia Towers 14 points. Correy Hickman and Courtney Mosloski each corralled six rebounds. Jamestown shot 39 percent from the field, 31 percent from the 3-point line and 71 percent from the free throw line.
The Chargers fall to 5-14 overall and 2-9 in conference play wile Jamestown moves to 11-7 on the season and 5-6 in the GPAC. BC will return to the Newman Flanagan Center Saturday to take on #3 Concordia at 2 p.m.
