Briar Cliff Men and Women beat Doane to end season

Briar Cliff secured a win over Doane University in the final regular season conference match-up, a fitting result for Senior Night.

Right from the gate, the Chargers jumped out to a quick lead in the first half.  They shot 55% from the field, which helped develop at 42-24 lead at halftime.  Doane’s Anthony Laravie made some big plays to cut BCU’s lead to single digits late in the contest.  However, BCU made enough plays at the end to secure a comfortable win.

The Chargers were without the GPAC leading scorer, Jackson Lamb, who suffered a season ending injury prior to the contest.   Austin Roetman, a fellow senior to Lamb, led all Chargers with 21 points.  Jaden Kleinhesselink scored 13 points, including a shot well beyond the arch that ended Doane’s momentum in their rally late in the contest.  Ethan Friedel’s performance was extraordinarily efficient, dishing out 10 assists and pulling down 8 rebounds.

A victory today kept the playoff hopes alive for Briar Cliff, pending the results of other GPAC games.  Hastings College ended up getting an upset win today over #9 ranked Dakota Wesleyan to stay a game ahead Briar Cliff in the GPAC standings in 8th place.  Only the top 8 teams in the standings qualify for the GPAC Tournament, which means the 2019-20 men’s basketball season has ended.

On senior night in the Newman Flanagan Center, the BCU women’s basketball team walked away with a 19-point victory over Doane University.

After a close first quarter, the Chargers were able to build a 35-23 lead at halftime.  They slowly grew that lead early on in the second half to cruise to a comfortable victory.

The Chargers were playing without two familiar faces in the starting lineup, Payton Slaughter and Konnor Sudmann.  Both sustained season-ending injuries prior to the contest.  The two have combined for over 25 points per game this season, but their teammates rallied on for a convincing win in their absence.

Madelyn Deitchler stepped up with a monumental individual performance.  Deitchler led all scorers in the contest with a career high 28 points, hitting 3 of 4 from deep.   She also led on the defensive end with 8 rebounds and a career high 4 steals.  Paityn Hagberg also had a career high night, scoring 8 points.

The Chargers needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive.  However, Midland edged Briar Cliff out with the tiebreaker in the GPAC standings with their win over Mount Marty.  The 2019-20 season has come to an end, with a final overall record of 11 wins and 19 losses (8-14 GPAC).
