Wayne, Neb. — Senior first baseman Bryce Bisenius went 6 for 8 at the plate with two homers and eight RBI while senior pitcher Aidan Breedlove fired five strong innings in the opener to help Wayne State College split a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Minnesota Duluth.  The Wildcats won the opener 12-3 but suffered a 10-9 loss to the Bulldogs in the second game.  WSC is now 7-11 and 6-8 in the NSIC while UMD is 6-15 and 4-13 in league games.

The opener saw Bisenius go 4 for 4 at the plate to fuel a 16-hit attack while Breedlove worked five strong innings and overcame a slow start giving up three runs in the first inning followed by four straight shutout innings to power the Wildcats to victory.

WSC opened with a five-run first inning.  CJ Neumann had a two-run single while Bisenius and Connor Fiene each had RBI singles.

Bisenius had an RBI double in the second inning, giving WSC a 6-3 lead after UMD scored three runs in the bottom of the first.

A leadoff homer by Peyton Barnes and a double by Neumann were key hits for WSC in the third for a 8-3 WSC lead.

A two-run single by Bisenius and RBI single from Neumann put WSC in front 11-3 and the ‘Cats closed the scoring in the sixth on a Barnes sacrifice fly that scored Bisenius (single) for the 12-3 win.

Bisenius was 4 for 4 with a double and four RBI.  Andrew Hanson went 3 for 4 with three runs scored while Neumann finished 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI and Barnes 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBI.

Breedlove (1-2) pitched five innings for the win, allowing three runs on six hits.  Freshman Keean Allen closed the game with two strong innings of relief, fanning three while allowing just one hit.

The second game saw WSC rally from an early 8-1 deficit to tie the game at 8-8, but UMD scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain a split with a 10-9 win.

UMD opened with a seven-run first inning.  Both teams scored in the second to make the score 8-1 after two.

WSC scored twice in the fourth and had a five-run fifth inning to rally for a 8-8 tie.  Bisenius belted a three-run homer in the fifth to go with RBI singles from Fiene and Barnes.

But UMD regained the lead with two runs in the eighth to take a 10-8 advantage.

WSC got the first two runners on in the ninth and Noah Roberts later scored on an RBI single from Fiene to reduce the Bulldog lead to 10-9, but the ‘Cats could not come up with another run to forge a tie.

Wayne State had 17 hits in the game with eight players having multi-hit games.  Roberts was 3 for 4 with three runs scored followed by Bisenius with a pair of homer going 2 for 4 with four RBI.  Fiene went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.

Starter Hunter Wienhoff lasted three innings, charged with eight runs.  Reliever Logan Walters worked three scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.  Lefthander Andrew Staebell (0-2) suffered the loss in 1 1/3 innings of work, charged with two runs and two hits while Lawson Zenner worked the remaining 2/3 of an inning.

Wayne State and Minnesota Duluth will close out their three-game NSIC series Sunday with a nine-inning game that has been moved up to 9 a.m. to beat incoming bad weather.
