WSC Brass and Percussion Concert Showcases Musical Diversity

WAYNE, Neb. (Oct. 19, 2020) – Creative fusion underscores the Wayne State College Brass and Percussion concert Monday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Ramsey Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, go to www.wsc.edu/watch-live. The program is accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/music. If patrons are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 they should remain at home and watch the livestreamed performance.

The Brass Knuckles Quintet performs a medley of musical styles, including jazz, Renaissance, Baroque, and 20th century classical pieces. Dr. Josh Calkin, WSC professor of low brass, directs the quintet.

The percussion ensembles present repertoire rich in diversity. The salsa groove of Bongito by Brian Slawson integrates castanets, claves, timbales, bongos, congas, and a guiro. The whimsical Witch Doctor by Ross Bagdasarian, made famous by Alvin and the Chipmunks, incorporates a duck call, siren whistle, slide whistle, and police whistle. The colorful set concludes with WSC’s fight song, On Wayne State. The percussion groups are directed by adjunct professor Brad Weber.
