On July 16, 1939, the first Soap Box Derby event was held at Scotts Bluff National Monument.  There were 27 participant racers and over 10,000 people in attendance. Except for the war years, this unofficial event was held on the Summit Road each year until 1951. In 1940, attendance reached 12,000.

Fond memories of the Soap Box Derby events can be relived during a special presentation in coordination with Scotts Bluff National Monument’s centennial. Presented by Steve Morgheim, this presentation will showcase rarely seen historical photos of the daring participants who piloted hand-built race cars down the Summit Road at Scotts Bluff National Monument.

Childhood memories of Soap Box Derby during the 1930’s and 1940’s inspired Steve Morgheim and Becky Hale to author and illustrate the book, The Soap Box Beagle. The annual races were a much anticipated community celebration, and its competitive nature drew large and excited crowds that cheered and supported the ingenious and daring participants. Such achievements will never be witnessed again, but you can relive the memories by attending this free program.
