United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced that Mitchell Nordmeyer, 27, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He received a sentence of 57 months with a three-year term of supervised release to follow. There is no parole in the federal system.
On October 20, 2019, Omaha Police Officers stopped a vehicle near 110th and I Streets for a traffic infraction and they made contact with the driver, Mitchell Nordmeyer, and a passenger. One officer identified the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When asked about the smell, the passenger said that Nordmeyer had been rolling a blunt (a type of marijuana cigarette), and she handed the blunt to the officers.
Officers searched the vehicle and located a drawstring bag on the rear seat. Inside the bag, officers found a 9mm Taurus handgun, approximately 100 grams of marijuana, and oxycodone pills. Officers arrested Nordmeyer. In a post-Miranda interview, Nordmeyer admitted to handling the firearm. He conveyed to officers his intent to purchase the firearm for protection. Nordmeyer was convicted of felony Attempted Kidnapping in Douglas County in 2016. Under federal law, felons are prohibited from possessing firearms.
This case was investigated by the Omaha Police Department, Gang Unit as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, which is a national initiative of the Department of Justice that was announced in 2001 to reduce and prevent violent crime and make the nation’s neighborhoods safer.
