Northeast to hold slew of classes at Norfolk Campus

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer another intensive six-week Professional Truck Driving course beginning later this month.

The course (TRDR 5100/19F & CRN #60112/60113) will be held Monday-Friday, September 23-November 1, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Utility Line/Truck Driving building, Room 104, directly east of Northeast’s main campus in Norfolk.

In this course, students will learn to operate articulated vehicles in a training environment that includes driving on city streets, two-lane and interstate highways. The program includes 240 contact hours, 44-plus hours of behind the wheel training and 190 hours of classroom, lab and observation.

Students will go for night drives and long runs. This means being gone for a week, overnights and
14-hour days.

Cost for the course, with Ed Lewis and Ryan Cook the instructors, is $1,995. Tuition does not include the cost of books, Department of Transportation physical, drug screen, MVR report, learner’s permit or the CDL license. NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a class that uses a revolutionary method to teach someone how to play the piano. The class is designed for anyone who has desired to play piano or for someone who only plays from sheet music and would like to learn another way.

Simply Music © Introductory Piano Class (MUSC 5100/19F & CRN# 60325) will meet four consecutive Tuesdays, September 24-October 15, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the Cox Activities Center, Room 105-A.

Students will learn songs in the four classes by using the Simply Music piano method where they will play from the first lesson without needing to read notes. Samples include gospel, blues, classical, and contemporary style pieces.

No prior experience is required, but students must age 8-years of age or older and must be able to acquire and use materials online; an additional $10 online expense is required. (Parents are required to stay with their children during the class if under 14-years of age.)

Cost of the class, with Linda Trone the instructor, is $20.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a new class that will explore skills needed to properly care for any landscape.

Landscape Management (HORT 5125/19F & CRN# 60355) will be held Tuesdays, September 24 and October 1, from 6-8 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth Building, Room 144.

Instructor Tree Bush will demonstrate how to skills such as pruning, mulching, cutting back, and general winterizing of plant material. This class will be useful for beginners or those with a few years of experience.

Cost of the class is $40.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a renewal class for CPR instructors later this month.

CPR Instructor Renewal (HLTH 5400/19F & CRN #60061) will be held Wednesday, September 25, from 6-10 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth Building, Room 124.

This American Heart Association course is a recertification for current CPR instructors. Any new materials and new procedures will be included in the four-hour course. Students much bring their current CPR instructor cards.

Cost of the class, with Brock Soderberg the instructor, is $40.

NORFOLK -Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer additional course options later this month and in early October for those interested in learning the basics of motorcycle riding.

Motorcycle Rider Course (TRAN 5105/19F & CRN #60023/60024) will be offered Friday through Sunday, September 27-29 or again (TRAN 5105/19F & CRN #60025/60025) October 4-6. Hours on Friday will be 6:30-10 p.m.; Saturday, 7:50 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Sunday 7:50 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Classes will be held in Room 103 in the Northeast Community College Utility Line building, just east of the main campus on Benjamin Avenue.

The class includes five hours of classroom instruction and ten hours of riding instruction. It begins with the basics, such as turning, shifting, and braking. Then it moves on to more advance street riding strategies. Professionally trained instructors teach in the classroom and then coach riders in a controlled riding area.

Within 30 days of the completing the course, students are required to take the MSF Basic eCourse. Details regarding this course will be sent to students after they register for the Motorcycle Rider Course. There is no additional cost for the mandatory eCourse.

Cost of the course, with Tom Broekemeier, James Jones and Michael Holcomb the instructors, is $250.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer another basic life support class for healthcare providers in late September.

BLS for Health Care Provide Course (HLTH 5300/19F & CRN #60062) will be held Saturday, September 28, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 105.

This course is designed to provide a cross section of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. A BLS for Healthcare Providers course certification card will be issued upon successful completion.

Cost of the course, with Ethan Larson the instructor, is $60.
