West Point – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a class on Microsoft Office in September.

Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook (INFO 5102/19F & CRN #60091) will be held Monday, September 9, in the Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Education Center, Room 212.

Whether one is new to Office suite, desire to take their skills to the next level or just need a refresher course for a current or potential job, look no further than this class. Instructor Diann Ballard will cover the essential skills in the powerhouse trio Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

NORFOLK – The Center for Enterprise at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will be the site of two seminars next month that will explain general sales and use taxes, and tax uses for manufacturing machinery and equipment.

General Sales and Use Tax Seminar (4 hours CPE credit) is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh College of Nursing building, Room 140. Distance learning opportunities are also available through Northeast’s extended campuses in O’Neill and West Point, as well as the Ainsworth regional office.

This course covers the basics of Nebraska sales and use tax. It is ideal for business owners and those considering starting a business, this course will not only benefit professionals but the general public as well. The presentation covers all areas of sales and use tax, including licensing requirements, exemptions, reporting and taxable services.

Manufacturing Machinery & Equipment Seminar (3 hours CPE credit) will be held that afternoon from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the same location with the same distance learning opportunities.

This class will cover the sales tax exemption for purchases of equipment used in the manufacturing process. Parts and repair labor for MME is included in this seminar. Discussion will include qualifying manufacturing operations and which equipment qualifies for the exemption. A portion of the session will be dedicated to contractors who annex or install MEE or perform repairs on MME. This course will benefit anyone operating a manufacturing facility or anyone who provides equipment, parts or repairs to manufacturing operations.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer an additional session of a medication aide course beginning soon.

Medication Aide (HLTH 1120/19F & CRN #16174) will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 10-December 3, from 2-4 p.m., in Room 103 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus. Jill Junck is the instructor.

This course is designed to prepare the student to assume the role and responsibilities of a Medication Aide working in a nursing facility. It will include information regarding medication administration, pharmacology rules and regulations, classification of drugs, orders, storage, abbreviations, and an overview of commonly used drugs and documentation.

Cost for the course is $366. Cost does not include a book, which is available in the Hawks Shop in the Northeast Library/Resource Center, (402) 844-7140.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College will offer beginning piano lessons to youth in September.

First Steps Piano Class (Ages 8-13) (MUSC5100/19F & CRN #60323) will be held Tuesdays, September 10 and 17, from 4-5 p.m. in the Cox Activities Center, Room 105-A, on the Norfolk campus. Parents are required to stay with their children during the class.

First Steps Piano Class (Ages 14+) (MUSC5100/19F & CRN: #60324) will be offered Tuesdays, September 10 and 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the same location.

Both classes are designed for those students who desire to play piano, but are not sure how to begin. They will take their first steps in these beginner classes and have an opportunity to sample piano and small 61-key “starter” electric keyboard. They will also learn about posture, hand placement in order to play comfortably and try out a variety of simple ways to play for enjoyment without reading notes.

Cost of each class, with Linda Trone the instructor, is $20.

NORFOLK – Landscaping generally focuses on a design, but incorporating mathematics is just as integral to ensure the project is properly laid out. Northeast Community College will offer a class in September that is designed to explore how basic math principles are used in landscaping.

Math in Landscaping (HORT5125/19F & CRN #60354) will be held Tuesdays, September 10 and 17, from 6-7:30 p.m., in the Ag/Allied Health Building, Room 144, on the Norfolk campus.

Instructor Trentee Bush will go over areas such as measuring odd shapes and sizes, estimating needs for mulch and calculating fertilizer or pesticide requirements. This is a great refresher for everyday math skills.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will be the site of a Paramedic Refresher course, sponsored by the Allied Health Department.

This course (EMTN 6295/19F & CRN #60218), will meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, September 11-13, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

This is a 24-hour refresher training course that fulfills required content for recertification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

The cost of the class is $200 and includes a lunch buffet for the three days. Please note that another paramedic refresher has been scheduled for November, but one will not be offered in January.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a basic life support renewal class for healthcare providers in September.

BLS for Healthcare Provider Renewal (HLTH 5305/19F & CRN #60056) will be held Wednesday, September 11, from 6-10 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101.

This course is designed to refresh the knowledge of a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Participants are asked to bring their certification card with them the night of the class.

Cost of the class, with Bradley Korth the instructor, is $40.

WEST POINT– A class hosted by the Northeast Community College West Point extended campus in September will introduce participants to beekeeping.

Beginner Beekeeping (AGRI 5120/19F & CRN #60092) will be held Thursday, September 12, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in Room 102 of the Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Education Center, 200 W. Washington St.

In this lectured-based class, participants will learn about beginner beekeeping. Instructor Melissa Heberer will provide an overview of a typical season’s work, honeybee life cycles, terminology and equipment needed. The goal of the class is to inspire further learning about honeybees and give participants the confidence to try beekeeping on their own.

Cost of the class is $20.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/19F & CRN #60057) is web-based and is available on-line 24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, September 14, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in Room 101 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Library/Resource Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/19F & CRN #60052); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/19S & CRN #60037); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/19S & CRN #60060) will be held Saturday, September 14, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification. This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. Online key codes for Part 1 (online course) are available at the Hawks Shop in the Library/Resource Center on the Norfolk campus, (402)-844-7140. Students will need to bring their AHA Online Course Completion Certificate (within 60 days) to be admitted to the Skills Testing Session. No textbook is required for this class.
