A report from the public of smoke coming from the building and a red glow inside drew firefighters from Gering and Scottsbluff to the Docu-Shred facility on M street in Gering around 10:40 p.m. Thursday night.
Fire Chief Nathan Flowers tells KNEB News arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the garage doors, and on entry discovered a compactor vehicle involved with an on-board shredder that apparently malfunctioned, caught on fire and ignited paper inside the vehicle.
Flowers says property owners helped with equipment and getting the vehicle outside, where all the paper had to be removed to completely knock down hot spots, and firefighters remained on scene until 3 a.m. Friday morning.
Damage was estimated at about $45,000, primarily to the vehicle.
