At about 6:52 a.m. on Monday morning the Stanton County Sheriff’s office responded to and investigated a two vehicle accident on Hwy 24 about two miles East of Norfolk that claimed the life of one driver and critically injured the other driver.
The accident occurred when a westbound pickup driven by Ried Krutz, 19, of Stanton crossed the center line for yet unknown reasons and collided nearly head on with an eastbound SUV driven by Jim Hoff, 63, of Norfolk.
Hoff was pronounced dead at the scene and Krutz was extricated from his wreckage by Stanton and Norfolk Fire and taken to FRHS by Norfolk Fire and Rescue. The Krutz pickup did roll after the collision and both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch. Seatbelts were not in use by either party and airbags did deploy.
Highway 24 was closed for about 2 ½ hours as the scene was investigated and cleared. An autopsy has been ordered on Hoff and will be undertaken Tuesday in Omaha.
The investigation is being continued by the Sheriff’s office. Stanton County Emergency Management also assisted at the scene with traffic control.
