Authorities in Box Butte County are investigating reports of a possible scam in which individuals are attempting to trick residents into handing over firearms and related items such as reloading equipment.
According to a release from Alliance Police Chief Philip Lukens, both his department and the Sheriff’s Office have been made aware of reports of “Federal Boys” or federal agents in the area attempting to confiscate firearms, and allegedly telling people they will be reimbursed for what they turn over.
Lukens says the departments are working closely on the issue, and have verified with the Federal Bureau of Investigation that no federal agencies are seeking firearms. The statement says organized crime groups can purport themselves in various facets to illegally obtain firearms to further commit crimes.
“We take these allegations seriously and want to caution the public to always reach out to their local law enforcement agency for verification before ever turning over firearms,” said Lukens. “It is our sincere desire to keep firearms in the hands of responsible citizens, and should anyone come to your residence or contact you regarding your firearms please contact the police immediately.”
