(AUDIO) LENRD to hold Virtual Meeting Thursday on potential for Groundwater Management Area locally

December 17th, 2020 | Beth Rogers

The Lower Elkhorn NRD is holding a virtual informational meeting on the potential of a groundwater management area in Cuming, Colfax, and Dodge Counties through Zoom Thursday night. Assistant Manager Brian Bruckner says the focus of the meeting will be on high nitrate levels in drinking water.

Bruckner says the meeting will go into specific details about what has been detected and what kind of percentages of wells maintain the necessary concentration.

Nitrate is found naturally in the environment; however, excess nitrate comes primarily from the use of commercial fertilizers (both organic and manufactured). Nitrate dissolves readily in water and when carried through the soil below plant roots can easily contaminate groundwater.

Bruckner says there will be a series of speakers discussing the topic.

Bruckner says Chapiro will speak to the Agricultural Audience Members, helping them understand whats being proposed and the way to adapt.

Bruckner tells KTIC News there will be one other speaker.

Bruckner says the Village of Dodge is working with Davila on a source water protection project due to water quality issues.

LENRD’s groundwater quality monitoring program continues to monitor levels of nitrate-nitrogen throughout the district. Bruckner explains what needs to happen in order for the threshold to be met.

The LENRD groundwater quality monitoring program has detected this in portions of the tri-county area.

Thursdays meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. A Link is available on the Lower Elkhorn NRD website/Facebook.
