Accountant sentenced for stealing nearly $110K from Wakefield church

PONCA, Neb. (AP) _ An accountant has been given jail time and probation for stealing nearly $110,000 from a Wakefield church. Dixon County District Court records say 46-year-old Michael Pommer was sentenced Monday to 18 months of probation and 90 days in jail. He was credited with one day already served and ordered to serve 30 days immediately. The remainder of jail time may be waived after he completes his probation. He also was fined $5,000. He pleaded no contest to one count of theft. Prosecutors dismissed 14 counts in exchange. Prosecutors say Pommer took the money from two bank accounts of Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield without church officials’ authorization. The records say the bank account transfers occurred from June 24, 2016, to Sept. 5 last year. A court affidavit says Pommer has since reimbursed the church nearly $115,000.
