Even with the devastating impact of the impact of the pandemic on the airline industry nationwide, boarding numbers at Western Nebraska Regional Airport topped 8,000 for 2020.
The airport is normally required to reach 10,000 boardings annually to receive $1 million in Federal Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding, however that requirement was waived in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Assistant Airport Director Cheryl Clause told KNEB News the total for 2020 was 8,891 boardings, with 7,814 of those being from SkyWest Airlines. Medical flights in 2020 accounted for another 957 boardings.
Clause said so far in January 2021, they have had 409 and she was anticipating around 700 for the month, but that will depend on how new schedule changes implemented by SkyWest Airlines impacts boardings.
Meanwhile, during the Airport Authority Board meeting Wednesday morning, Dawne Wolfe was sworn in as the newest board member, replacing outgoing board member Tim Gieschen.
